Design philosophy

We wanted a small library with no dependencies and a tiny footprint. It should respect the user’s choices and the browser’s signals, keep its API simple and its docs clear, and stay usable by keyboard and screen reader.

Inspiration

The look of this site, from the EU-flag palette and the sharp corners to the serif display face and the light/dark/high-contrast themes, comes from ConsentTheater.org. We liked what they built, so we borrowed from it liberally.

Zest also builds on prior consent work:

• Klaro, an open source consent manager
• CookieConsent by Orest Bida, proof that a consent tool can be lightweight, vanilla JS, and loved by thousands
• Tarteaucitron, a GDPR cookie manager

Thanks

• The open source community, whose privacy-respecting tools made this possible
• The GDPR and CCPA, which forced the web to take privacy seriously
